Nettly Burn Renewable Energy Park: Delivering Solar Development on Peatland

We are pleased to have supported the successful consenting of the Nettly Burn Renewable Energy Park in Fife, Scotland, acting as ecological consultants for the project.

Located near Knockhill and set within an area of peatland, the project presented a unique and technically challenging opportunity. Peatlands are among the UK’s most valuable habitats for carbon storage and biodiversity, and careful consideration was required to balance renewable energy generation with environmental protection.

A Collaborative, Evidence-Led Approach

From the outset, we worked closely with key stakeholders, including NatureScot and SEPA, to address uncertainties around the potential impacts of solar infrastructure on peatland systems. Early engagement was critical in shaping a robust and deliverable strategy.

Our role included:

  • Producing the Environmental Impact Assessment Report
  • Leading ecological surveys and impact assessment
  • Consulting with statutory bodies and stakeholders
  • Designing a Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan (HMMP)

Protecting What Matters Most

A key outcome of the project was the development of a design approach that:

  • Avoids high-quality peatland by protecting areas in the best ecological condition
  • Targets development on degraded peatland, minimising environmental impact
  • Delivers habitat enhancement, improving the condition of retained peatland areas

This approach ensures that the most sensitive habitats are safeguarded while still enabling renewable energy generation.

Looking Ahead: Research and Monitoring

Recognising the limited existing evidence base around solar development on peatlands, the project includes a strong commitment to long-term monitoring and research. This may involve collaboration with academic institutions to better understand:

  • The effects of solar arrays on peatland hydrology
  • Changes in vegetation communities, including sphagnum moss
  • Opportunities for habitat restoration alongside infrastructure

The Nettly Burn project demonstrates how thoughtful design, early stakeholder engagement, and robust ecological assessment can unlock renewable energy development in sensitive environments.
