Avian Ecology

Helios Renewable Energy Project

Avian Ecology is acting as the ecological and ornithological consultant in respect of the Helios Renewable Energy Project solar farm. This Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) will have an expected energy generating capacity of 190MW, sufficient to power 47,500 homes. The project is located in North Yorkshire and extends over approximately 476 hectares of predominantly agricultural land. The proposed development includes solar panels, on-site substations, battery energy storage system (BESS) and an associated grid connection.

A full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been undertaken to identify and assess potential environmental effects of the project. Avian Ecology have conducted an assessment of the potential ecological effects of the proposals and have proposed mitigation measures to address any impacts on ecological receptors. This has included undertaking a range of baseline surveys including habitats, bats, breeding and wintering birds to inform the assessment, as well as consultation with a range of stakeholders. Avian subsequently authored the Biodiversity chapter of the Environmental Statement, and undertook a Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessment for the proposals.

The Planning Inspectorate officially accepted the development consent order application for the Helios Renewable Energy Project at the end of 2024. The examination stage closed on the 3rd June 2025 with a target of The Examining Authority’s Recommendation Report being submitted to the Secretary of State no later than September 2025.
